Today’s review is not of a tarot deck, but of an affirmation deck. The Universe Has Your Back is created by famed writer, Gabrielle Bernstein and designed by Micaela Ezra. I purchased my copy of this deck on Amazon for $16-17 USD (at the time of this review, it is still available for this price point!) So what are my likes and dislikes about this deck? Gabrielle Bernstein is what I would consider a motivational life coach writer. She is popular for her book, by the same name, The Universe Has Your Back: Transform Fear Into Faith. This affirmation deck is a manifestation of that printed book, with (from what I’ve read) similar quotes and passages.
The Packaging
The packaging for this affirmation deck is lovely and was more than what I expected for an affirmation deck. It comes in a black, matte, two piece, sturdy cardboard box, with similar design and quote in the inside lid as the cards. It also conveniently has finger cutouts on the top lid to make it easier to open.
Cardstock Quality
The card stock for this deck is awesome! In fact, it is the same sturdy thickness and matte velvet finish as my Starchild Tarot decks; and that’s saying a lot! The back of the card is adorned with a black pen and ink style artwork of leaves/branches, with a golden moon in the center. Honestly, I would have liked to see the backs designed differently and a little more coherent to the darker artwork of the box. The actual affirmations are beautifully designed with a watercolor style of rainbow colors as well as hand lettered fonts.
The Guidebook
No guidebook necessary for most affirmation and oracle decks. However, it did come with a type of “welcome message” card from the author.
Overall, visually this deck was appealing but the actual affirmations seemed quite repetitive and lacking any depth for me. They are lovely cards to have if you haven’t been on a spiritual journey for long and just want a daily pick-me-up. Overtime though, I “grew out” of these cards and wanted something more. They have since found a new and loving home.
